Who covers the loss?

There is no generally applicable answer to the issue of liability after a card crime. Liability generally depends on the type of incident, your own behaviour (blame), and the card contract. What is certain is that everybody is personally responsible for their cards. If there is a breach of duty of care, you yourself assume liability in most cases.

Consequences

For the card holder, card crime is extremely unpleasant and associated with a great deal of inconvenience.

Blocked card
If there is a suspicion of card crime, the financial institutions immediately block the card in question. This means the card holder is in the awkward position of no longer being able to use the card. Owning more than one card is therefore recommended so as not to encounter payment difficulties.

Empty account
In the worse case, those not checking their accounts regularly are not going to notice that skimming has taken place until weeks have passed by. Offenders have long since emptied their accounts. A case of skimming entails a great deal of time and effort for the card holder, the financial institution and the police. A long time can pass before a single case is investigated and resolved.
