How to protect yourself and your customers from skimming

Skimming affects ATMs and ticket machines as well as payment terminals in the retail trade. Manipulation of machines enables card data and PIN codes to be saved, and usually to be forwarded on electronically. If electronic transmission is not possible, the equipment is stolen a short time after being manipulated.

As a business, petrol station or restaurant, this is how you can protect yourself, and your customers, from skimming:

Access for authorised persons only
Only allow authorised persons to access the payment terminals. Be mistrustful towards strangers. Scammers often pretend to be technicians. Only grant access to those technicians called in by yourself.

Regular checks
Inspect the payment terminals daily for possible manipulation (loose parts, damage, scratches, traces of glue) and carry out regular functional testing.

Report your suspicions
If you suspect manipulation, inform your terminal provider. Have your equipment replaced.

Report break-ins
Report every break-in and suspicion of a break-in to the police, even if nothing, or nothing important, has been stolen. Always have your payment terminals inspected after a break-in.

Protect your payment terminals
Lock away mobile terminals overnight if possible.
